Why You Worry & Overthink All The Time

overthinking worrying

There’s a simple reason why you overthink and endlessly worry - and it's not because you're broken or doing anything wrong. It's because on some level it makes sense for you to act in these ways. I know that might sound odd, but stay with me...

Here's the thing - as we all grow up we take on certain beliefs about life based on the personal experiences we had. We do this as a way of helping us make sense of the world and more importantly feel safe (physically & emotionally).

Those beliefs which are typically unconscious don't just go away - and so you unknowingly go about living your life still with these childhood unconscious beliefs in the drivers seat.

It is because of these beliefs that mean it makes total sense for you to be overthinking and worrying. Right now for you worrying & overthinking make as much sense as continuing to breathe - which is why no techniques, tools or tricks that try to change the surface level behaviours only won't work.

Here's some examples of common unconscious beliefs overthinkers and worriers might have:

  • The Unknown / Future Is Always Scary (which often leads to worrying & dread of the future)
  • I Can't Cope With Uncertainty (which often leads to planning lots & trying to predict the future)
  • Planning Helps Avoid Bad Things Happening (which oftenleads to overplaying & procrastination)
  • I Couldn't Cope With 'x' Happening (which often leads to catastrophising & anxious behaviours)
  • Worrying About The Future Is Prudent (which often leads to spend a lot of time trying to predict the future)
  • If I Don't Go Over Every Detail I'll Miss Something (which often leads to feeling overwhelmed & overthinking things)

There is no judgement here, we all have unconscious beliefs whirling around inside our heads.

WHY YOU'RE STUCK IN A CYCLE OF OVERTHINKING & WORRYING

As I mentioned above these beliefs are the drivers and root cause of your overthinking and worrying. And yet so often the help and advice out there is just about coping with or managing the surface level behaviours.

Think of it like this - imagine a gardener who starts to see weeds in their flower beds. Imagine if they went round and just chopped off the bits of the root they could see. Very quickly their garden would look weed free and they'd likely be a happy gardener. But within a few days those weeds start to come back. And so now to keep the garden looking nice the gardener needs to go through that same process over and over.

Now you probably know the answer to the gardeners dilemma - to take the weeds out by the root. Yes, it might take a bit longer and a bit more effort, yet the end result is long lasting and much more effective as the weeds can't come back if there's no root.

How is this relevant to your overthinking and worrying? Most approaches out there are like the gardeners first option - they're quick fixes that don't last because they don't get to the roots.

And when you don't get to the roots just like with our gardener - know matter how good you get at coping with or managing things you still find your overthinking and worrying coming back.

Which is why we need to get to the roots of why you overthink and worry - which is those unconscious beliefs you picked up that I talked about above. It's the difference between coping with and managing vs breaking free and creating real freedom, peace & joy.

BREAK FREE FROM YOUR CYCLE OF OVERTHINKING & WORRYING

So, if we want to create real change; deep lasting transformation... we need to do the inner work to get the 'weeds' (unconscious beliefs) out by the root.

To do this you need to go on an inner exploration first to bring those unconscious beliefs to the surface so that you can then start to explore them. You can start to question them. Are they true? Are they helpful? Where did they even come from?

Through this process of self exploration those beliefs start to shift and or disappear entirely - the result of which is how it now makes sense for you to show up looks completely different.

This shift happens not because you're trying to or because you've get a technique to control your thoughts but simply because that's how it looks like it makes sense for you to show up. You don't have to try to not worry or overthink - you just start to do those things less and less because that's what makes sense for you now.

This is how you create lasting transformation. Not by chopping the top off a weed so your garden looks nice for a bit. But by going into the roots and pulling it all out so it’s no longer an issue.

Here's a few steps to get you started on this journey...

STEP 1 - Notice Your Thoughts. There's a lot going on inside your head, start to practice noticing the thoughts. Imagine them like music that you are listening to. Simply observe them, notice them and allow them to be (as best you can).

STEP 2 - Question Things. As you start to notice your thoughts get curious, where do they come from? Why do you think that? Do you agree or disagree with your thoughts? Are they True? Treat this as a playful exploration. You're not trying to find an 'answer', you're just exploring and being curious about what's going on inside your head.

It is through these two steps that you can completely transform not just your overthinking and worrying but your entire experience of life. This is a journey of becoming more aware and self exploration that can free you from the limitations and suffering that you've been experiencing for so long.
